Webinar Series on Cancer Registration

The Pacific Health Information Network recently launched a series of free, open-access webinars from global and regional experts in cancer data management and registration. The purpose of this webinar series, which commenced in October 2021, is to provide opportunities to progressively build understanding about how cancer registries work.

The webinar series is open to all and most suited to:

  • Pathologists
  • Epidemiologists, statisticians and data analysts
  • Cancer registrars
  • Clinical coders
  • Cancer clinicians

Our second webinar in the series will be addressing the topic Why A Cancer Registry?, including the following aspects:

  • Useful outputs: the critical information, the most useful statistics
  • Relevance for policy and planning
  • Application to cancer control and health system strengthening
  • Interesting cases
  • Responding to the media
  • Immediate and long-term benefits

These webinars will be hosted by the Pacific Health Information Network (PHIN) and delivered by international cancer registration experts. This event is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pacific Community (SPC).

Key Speakers: 
Dr Eka Buadromo

Dr Buadromo is a General Pathologist with over 20 years of practice in the Pacific region. She has served in the field of diagnostic pathology and laboratory management as the country’s Chief Pathologist in Fiji and Tonga and offered assistance in other laboratory services in the region including Samoa. She then joined the Pacific Community as Senior Laboratory Adviser leading the laboratory team and supporting trainee pathologists in the region through postgraduate teaching at the Fiji National University.

Prof. Joanne Aitken
Prof. Aitken is Head of the Viertel Cancer Research Centre at Cancer Council Queensland, Director of the Australian Childhood Cancer Registry, a member of Cancer Australia’s Advisory Council and President of the International Association of Cancer Registries. She is a cancer epidemiologist who is internationally recognized for her work in the epidemiology of skin cancer and cancer in children, and has over 250 publications. She has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from Griffith University, a Master of Science in Epidemiology from Harvard University and a PhD from the University of Queensland. She is a Honorary Professor at the School of Public Health, The University of Queensland and has Adjunct Professorial appointments at the Queensland University of Technology and University of Southern Queensland.
